White-shirted Mormon missionaries

All right, so I decided it’s enough gravity for now. It’s definitely time to get a little more down to earth, lest the blog’s name loses its meaning completely. Besides, this has had me wondering for quite some time, anyway. I can understand how the Mormons – or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – chose to dress their missionaries up in white shirts and ties back in the 1950′s, or the 1960′s, even. It might even work in the hardcore evangelical territories of America today, for all I know.

What really bothers me, though, is this: If the missionaries’ chief err… mission is to draw new followers to their church, one would think they made sure to adapt to local customs (when in Rome…). I mean, come on… These are serious business people, who once bought the Coca-Cola Company, for Christ’s Latter-day sake!

Perhaps they’re not aware of it, after all, but in these parts one of these (picture to the right) would generally be regarded a tad weird, but two? Really… It’s not that we’re likely to think they’re William “D-Fens” Foster clones on a door-to-door rampage, or anything, but it’s just too… alien.

So what’s it gonna be? Win ‘em or freak ‘em out? And what’s with those white shirts, anyway? I’m sincerely curious, so if you know, please leave a comment.

As for the blog, I can’t promise an awful lot of insignificances in the immediate future. Too much craziness going on for that these days. This was a one-off, for a while, I think. But can’t promise anything.
