You had a dream, you said. Could this possibly be it? Well, it certainly took its time coming true, but here we are: 338 Obama electoral votes and a total of 53,516,786 votes – and counting (at 7:10 AM Norwegian time). This has to be it.
“The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America — I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you — we as a people will get there,” president-elect Barack Obama told the hundreds of thousands attending the Grant Park celebration, and I’m sure he’s right.
But we’ve seen interview upon interview with American voters, politicians and dignitaries playing down the race issue, saying “the best candidate won, and yes, he’s African American,” but really, they cannot be serious:
Well, of course the best candidate won. There’s no doubt about that, but leave a little room for Doctor Martin Luther King’s dream, if you please, for surely, this has to be a great moment – for America and the world at large.
Congratulations, all. It was about time.
